OCA Partnership Program
What is the Partnership Program?
The OCA Partnership Program provides a way for individuals, churches, small groups, and companies to partner and build relationships with specific students. At OCA, we believe it takes a village to raise a child. For a yearly donation of $3,500 or more you can help cover the cost of tuition while also encouraging the student through letters and interactions with the student you partner with.
Why are Partners Needed?
The partnership program at OCA makes it possible to change the cycle of generational poverty with students in the Raleigh community. Did you know that 53,687 students qualify for free lunch in Wake County? Also, low income students are typically disqualified from 90% of the jobs in America. At OCA, 54% of OCA students are low income. However, those 54% are changing the trend and being set up for success. These students will be able to go to college as well as realistically pursue whatever career they decide. What is the difference between the low-income students at OCA and other low income students? A top-level education, love, and a large army of people who care are a few of the ingredients OCA uses to change a student’s life forever and help end the cycle of generational poverty in their lives.
How do Partners make an impact?
Our partners provide the financial resources to let these low-income students receive a great education as well as show these students through their giving and letters that they are not alone. As a partner, you will write and receive 2 letters a year from the student you partner with to hear an update on their school and life. Also, there will be 2 partner days throughout the year where you will get to meet the student and interact with them. This is an optional day but the experience is well worth the time.
A Full Partner provides a full partnership for an individual student. Starting in 2016-2017, Full Partners contribute $7,000 annually.
A Half Partner also desires to support the education of a student, but makes an annual investment of $3,500. (We encourage our Half Partners to find a friend to Partner with them!).
A Partner Group is a small group of individuals who together share the financial and time commitment of a Full Partner. This is a great option for a Bible study, small group, or group of friends.
A classroom partner makes an annual contribution of $1,500 or more to partner with a classroom of twenty students for the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
WILL THE STUDENT(S) I PARTNER WITH AT OAK CITY ACADEMY EVER CHANGE?
As part of your support of the work of Oak City Academy, your gift is tied to a partnership of a particular student (or students). In some cases the student you partner with will change. Why is this? Students sometimes end up leaving OCA due to the complex social dynamics of high poverty areas. Kids in low-income families often live transient lives. Job changes, housing changes, family changes, addiction issues—all of these are factors that affect schooling.
WHAT HAPPENS AT PARTNER DAY?
Each Partner Day is slightly different, but each Partner Day begins with a program including a showcase of student excellence, as well as testimonies and a report from our Headmaster, Danny Breed. Partners then are dismissed to spend time with students in the classroom, and then a time of lunch. Our hope is that through the Partner Days and the letters your partnered student(s) send you, you will develop a connection with your student.
WHAT IF I CANNOT ATTEND PARTNER DAYS?
Students look forward to meeting Partners, but are also understanding. Attendance is completely optional. If Partner Day doesn’t work with your schedule, we like to arrange separate times during the school day for Partners to come visit or have lunch with their student.
CAN I GIVE GIFTS TO MY STUDENT PARTNER?
No. We do ask that you refrain from giving additional gifts or money to your student partners. If you wish to make an additional financial donation, we will be able to identify a need or program that benefits all the students and fits your intentions.
CAN I GET INVOLVED IN OTHER WAYS AT OAK CITY ACADEMY?
Yes. Some of our partners also serve as volunteers at the school and we encourage this, but it is not assured that you will spend time with your student. If you are interested in volunteering, please review the volunteer opportunities on our web site.
HOW LONG SHOULD MY PARTNERSHIP LAST?
Ideally, each Partner supports their student until he or she graduates from Oak City Academy. We also ask Partners of graduating students to be re-Partnered with an incoming kindergartener.
We recognize, however, that circumstances change. Partnership may be discontinued at any time.
Know that our student’s circumstances may change as well. Families move. change schools, and students are sometimes asked to leave. We inform Partners if any such circumstance affects their student. We will then offer the opportunity to partner with a different student in need of help.
As a Oak City Academy Partner, you are an important part of the school. It is recognized that parents are the primary partners for their children, but all children need to know that there are others who care deeply about their well-being and are willing to walk with them on their journey through life.
WHAT COMMUNICATION WILL I RECEIVE FROM MY STUDENT?
You will receive two mailings from the student: A letter at the beginning of the year and a letter at the end-of-year letter. Each letter includes a brief note from your student’s teacher about the student.
CAN I WRITE LETTERS TO MY STUDENT PARTNER(S)?
Yes, we encourage our Partners to reply with a letter of encouragement to their Partnered student, and to share a bit about their life. These letters can be sent to the front office and are reviewed by the administration team.
CAN I PARTNER WITH MORE THAN ONE STUDENT?
Yes! You will receive communication from all of the students that you partner with. We try to keep Partners of multiple students with students in the same grade, so that at Partner Day you can spend time with more than one student.
